Google AI Overviews and Gemini Optimization

AI Overviews (formerly SGE) shows a ready-made answer above the regular results and adds several source links to it. AI Mode and Gemini work on a similar logic. We prepare your site so Google can take its pages as a source: technically, structurally and through trust signals.

Google AI Overviews optimization

Why does your business need AI Overviews visibility?

For some queries Google shows an AI answer first, and the regular results only below it. The user sees the answer and several sources behind it. If your site is not among them, a competitor gets the attention before the person ever reaches the classic results.

  • The first screen

The AI block sits above the organic results and on mobile often takes up the whole screen.

  • One foundation for three formats

AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini rely on Google's index and signals, so one body of work pays off in several places at once.

  • Fewer clicks, but targeted ones

People who click through from an AI answer have already read the short version and arrive with a specific intent.

How does Google choose sources for AI Overviews?

Google has no separate "ranking for AI". According to its documentation, a page can become a source if it is indexed and can be shown with a snippet in regular search. After that, the same quality signals as in classic SEO decide, plus how clearly the page answers a specific sub-question.

Google documentation: AI features and your website

How Google picks sources for AI Overviews
  1. 01

    Indexing and snippet

The page must be crawled by Googlebot and indexed without nosnippet and without strict max-snippet limits. Without that it will appear neither in the results nor in an AI answer.

  2. 02

    Query fan-out

For complex queries, especially in AI Mode, Google runs several searches across subtopics and assembles the answer from different pages. Pages where each subsection answers one specific question have a chance.

  3. 03

    Trust signals (E-E-A-T)

A real company, an author or a team, sources, up-to-date dates, brand mentions on other sites. For medicine, finance and law these requirements are stricter.

  4. 04

    Entities

Google must understand unambiguously who you are and what you do: the same name, contacts and description on your site, in Google Business Profile, directories and social networks, plus Organization markup.

How do you control how your site appears in AI Overviews and Gemini?

There is no separate bot for AI Overviews: Google uses the regular Googlebot. So blocking AI bots in robots.txt does not remove your site from AI Overviews, while disallowing snippets removes it from AI answers and partly from regular results too.

ToolWhat it affectsWhen to use it
Googlebot in robots.txtGoogle Search, including AI Overviews and AI ModeNever block it for pages that should bring traffic
Google-Extended in robots.txtUse of content for Gemini models; does not affect AI Overviews in SearchIf you do not want your content used for Gemini
nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippetSnippets in results and AI answersOnly for fragments that must not be quoted (prices under NDA, personal data)
noindexComplete exclusion from searchService pages

Before changing robots.txt, check that Googlebot can access CSS and JS: without them Google may misread the page.

What is included in Google AI Overviews optimization?

  • AI visibility audit

We check which queries in your niche trigger AI Overviews, who is among the sources and whether you are one of them. We fix a list of queries for monthly measurements.

  • Technical preparation

Indexing, Googlebot access to resources, snippet restrictions, speed, Organization, Product, Article and BreadcrumbList markup matching the visible content.

  • Content structure for sub-questions

We rebuild key pages: questions in subheadings, a short direct answer right under them, tables and lists where the content calls for them.

  • Trust signals and mentions

Google Business Profile, reviews, brand mentions on industry sites and in the media, and the same company details everywhere.

Which businesses should work on AI Overviews?

  • Online storesFor product queries Google pulls data from Merchant Center and product pages: prices, availability, specifications.
  • B2B and SaaSComparison queries like "inventory system for a warehouse" often get an AI answer with a list of solutions.
  • Medicine, law, financeOn complex questions Google answers more cautiously and more often relies on sources with clear expertise signals.
  • Local businessFor "near me" and city queries, Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent contact details matter.

When will your site appear in AI Overviews?

Nobody can give an exact timeline: Google decides on its own whether to show an AI answer for a query and from which sources. Technical fixes get indexed within a few weeks. Stable presence among the sources for competitive queries usually builds together with organic ranking growth, over 4–6 months. We give a specific forecast after the audit.

Frequently asked questions about AI Overviews and Gemini

Do I need classic SEO to get into AI Overviews?

Yes. AI Overviews takes its sources from Google's index, so without indexing, a sound technical base and rankings a page has almost no chance. Work on AI Overviews complements SEO promotion rather than replacing it.

How can I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?

Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the regular Performance report under the "Web" search type. Google provides no separate filter, so we keep our own list of queries and record monthly which of them have your site among the sources.

Can I block AI Overviews and still stay in search?

Not completely. AI Overviews uses the same Googlebot. You can limit quoting of individual fragments with data-nosnippet or max-snippet, but this affects regular snippets as well.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews is a short block above the regular results. AI Mode is a separate search mode in a dialogue format, where Google runs more sub-queries and shows more sources. Preparing a site for both is the same.

Does Google-Extended affect rankings in AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls the use of content for Gemini models and does not affect indexing or how the site appears in Search, including AI Overviews.

How is this different from ChatGPT promotion?

The content quality principles are similar, but the sources differ: Google relies on its own index, while ChatGPT searches through its own bots and Bing. For ChatGPT, see the ChatGPT promotion page.
